The legendary poet and musician Gil Scott-Heron has died at the age of 62. (Gilbert Scott-Heron: April 1, 1949 – May 27, 2011, was an American poet, musician, author, and activist) A profoundly important powerful voice, revered by any truth seeking individual, Gil Scott-Heron will be greatly missed. Best known for his piece “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised,” Scott-Heron was considered by many to be the father of hip-hop.

Chuck D of Public Enemy said in 2010, “You can go into Ginsberg and the Beat poets and Dylan, but Gil Scott-Heron is the manifestation of the modern word. He and the Last Poets set the stage for everyone else.”

R.I.P.
• Public Enemy's Chuck D stated (on Twitter) "RIP GSH...and we do what we do and how we do because of you."

• Usher stated "I just learned of the loss of a very important poet...R.I.P., Gil Scott-Heron. The revolution will be live!!".
• Richard Russel, producer of Scott-Heron's final studio album, called him a "father figure of sorts to me".
